Not everyone owns a Phonograph Player, or for that matter, a CD Player - I live in a college town where at least half the students don't own a Phonograph Player or a CD Player -They listen to iTunes or Pandora, or whatnot / etc. Even though not everyone owns an iPad or an iPhone. And updating the Format options to include current media would help - at least some of the more popular kinds (like the iOS App). The thing is, even here at Discogs, as fantastic as it is, it isn't perfect (I imagine no one is paid enough to make it perfect ). So again as with iOS Apps, a DVD is actually a package, or more accurately, media that stores a package or packages (which may contain audio files).

technically, (movie) DVD's don't even need to contain audio files at all. I suspect all those submitting DVD releases are supplying the proper details in the Notes section (wink ) In fact "5.1" isn't even an option under the DVD Format - under DVD "Channels" the only options are: And under the DVD option, there are no format options like : AC3, DTS, DD, PCM, ETC.

That's right! Not even "5.1 surround sound" guaranties high quality Lossless audio. The interesting thing are standard (movie) DVD's - that format, not unlike the iOS App is also something of a container - in which any number of audio formats can be found, some Lossy. "CD, CD-ROM, Enhanced" - Although accepted, there is no indication of the audio codec (Lossy / Lossless) the kind of audio format. Several other Formats are not necessarily "audio" - for example:Īnd the options provided for such Formats are not extensive enough to accurately describe all releases.
